avatar

I absolutely loved avatar. I saw it in 3-d twice I had to and trust me when I say 3-d was the only way to see it. The movie was really beautiful so it was no surprise when it one best visual effects at the oscars. But one thing the movie did lack was story. The plot was a blend of a few movies. Two big influences are dances with wolves and fern gully. And now just add a touch of 8ft blue aliens and you have avatar. But despite the cheap plot and trust me when I tell you there was a lot of gripping about it. But despite that people really loved the movie I mean why else is it still in theaters I mean c'mon the dvd is now out. But that just goes to show you how good the movie really is. Every time I watch it I still fall in love with it. The hype about the movie is what really got me pumped about the movie. The fact that james cameron had been working on the movie for years and how this movie was his dream he just need technology to catch up with his idea. What I did not like is the fact that now there is going to be a sequel and probably a sequel to the sequel. The first one was a beautiful movie. Why try to ruin that or to try and top that. I have when people cannot let things go the movie was great let it go do not ruin it. But to talk more about the visuals for a minute. They were something to remember there were far to many moments in the movie where I felt like I was really there like when they were flying that was way to real.

dark city

Dark city is truly a cult classic. The premise of the story is shrouded in complete mystery which is how it starts and how how we come to meet the famed Mr. John Murdoc. This opening is nothing new to the science fiction world. Where we are introduced to a character who struggles to regain their memories after waking up with amnesia. Which of course makes up for an interesting story. What's nice about this set up is that that character wakes up at the scene of a gruesome murder naked in a bathtub with nothing but questions and a telephone call from an anonymous man tell Mr. Murdoc he needs to flee because the cops would be at the scene in a matter of moments. The character goes on a horrible race against time to discover the truth along with his memories. The main character becomes obsessed with shell beach a place he remembers growing up in but cant remember how to get there and for some reason no one else does for some reason. Now being pursued by more people than just the cops our faithful hero is running out of places to hide and people to trust which would be the case in that situation. But in all unlikeliness a cop comes to his aid and together they discover the truth which is really shocking that a bunch of humans had been taken by these aliens to a secret place to be studied like rats in order to understand the human soul so the aliens could survive. But there is a turn of events Mr. Murdoc can some how que like them thus altering everything. I would have to say the movie should have gotten more recognition that it did. It is a great film. I would recommend it to anyone.

blood child

Blood child has to my favorite story I have read this semester. I just wish it was not a short story. The whole idea for it was 100% original. The story did remind me of aliens only because of how the zenomorphs need a host for their species. But I still maintain that this story is original. I had to read it twice in order to understand what was going on. But I am glad I did because there was a lot to understand. And that was really important to really get the story. The book was very science fiction. The author Octavia Butler really plays with our fears. I really respect that. Blood child is not an easy story to stomach. Especially when she describes the birthing scene that was really rough. Especially on the main character who is supposed to carry the creatures eggs knowing full well what will happen to him. We often have nightmares about such catastrophe's happening to us where in some scenario we encounter some sort of bug or animal we have never seen before and then bitten by them or something much like that were DNA is exchanged. And then later on we might be fine for one minute and then all of a sudden we are stricken with horrible pain beyond any conceivable notion. And just before we die we witness these horrible little creatures coming out of our bodies and with or last breath we know what has befallen us. And it is that very fear the author left us with to feel. I really enjoyed the authors note about how many people mistaken the story for one about slavery. And to be quite honest it is not hard to see why it be seen as so. But I could also see how the book was primarily about this strange relationship between the two species.

oryx and crake

Oryx and crake was not the worst book I have read. But I expected a little more when I read the back of the book it sounded really promising. The first quarter of the book is nothing but reminiscing of a past long ago. This was really annoying for a very long time I kept wanting to get past that part. Just back and forth back and forth. I kept really wanting to know what is going on in the present. Because there seemed to be some sort of catastrophe. And snowman or once known as jimmy seemed to be one of the last originals. Who seemed to be some sort of spectacle or some sort of exotic animal. When the book would rewind you got a sense there was a lot of genetic modification going on which meant that people were sick and needing things like fresh grown organs from something called a pigoon. The post apocalyptic world the novel is set in is fantastic and wild world. The book gives up no details easily its like watching lost. You painstakingly have to read to get any details out of the book. And even then almost nothing is reveled. But it is this that make the book very strong. One thing that intrigued me is how crake formed his own society. Of nieve people making them live how he feels society should live. And when oryx enters the picture things take a weird turn. Jimmy or should I say snowman has an unhealthy obsession with her being with her is never enough. He wants to know all these details about her old life. Despite the fact that oryx tells him it means nothing. That she did what she had to and does not consider to many things bad. After all she is still alive and thats all that is important.

hitch hikers guide to the galaxy

The audio Hitch hikers guide to the galaxy was crazy. I had a really hard time picking out all the voices but it was fun to listen to it was really funny at times and I had really hard time taking it serious. My first introduction to the series was the american movie some time in the 2000's but I really enjoyed that so this was a treat and I was just that. But like I said I couldn't really pick out the different voices and a lot of time I couldn't figure out what was going on. They did a lot of talking and I could not figure out what scenario was playing out. Not that I probably could have given the fact that there were images to the sound. Because I have never read the book. So I am more than aware that the movie that I saw in the 2000's was cut up into pieces so while I was listening I only had a rough idea. So I would be listening hear something I recognized from the movie and get really into it. But I think the book and audio is way better there is so much more it is way juicier and marvin was so much cooler. He had way more personality. And I love in the audio how they really go out of the way to neglect him. And how they even forgot him on magrathia. I really enjoyed how spread out everything is. Everything is a giant adventure which is really nice it really is completley different from the hollywood movie. I really home they make a better more accurate one more like the book and lees like sparknotes. Although the one thing I did like about the hollywood movie is alan rickman he was entertaining.

the golden compass

The book is definitely an interesting on and I know I often start these things just like this but I am serious this book is definitely an interesting one. The book starts off with the girl lyra and this floating object that symbolizes her soul called pantalaimon. I know how interesting thats exactly what I said. She decides to go off on a wild chase to get her best friend back and the kids are not very old but the author hints at their fondness for each other for sex way down the line. But goes with a woman named Mrs. Coulter instead so much for roger or is it.

serenity

Ooooh I loved serenity. I saw it twice in theaters when it first came out. I really loved the show it came from firefly. Oddly enough I saw serenity before I saw firefly but since I saw serenity I have seen the entire show twice. What I enjoyed about the movie the first time I saw it was the fact that it seemed that because of it being a movie they got big budget and super sized everything. Which was really nice. But what kinda throws me off is the technology its more futuristic. But like I said I did not mind at all. What was really nice about the show firefly is that it was a mixture of old west with space. And I would have to say it was an original idea and I have never seen a show like it. What was really cool about the movie serenity was that you finally got to see the reavers. In the show they mentioned them a lot and you got to see a guy become one but you didnt get to see them. But I was curious as crazy and demented as they are how are they capable of piloting a ship and why did they never attack their own. In the movie they introduce a new character named Mr. Universe and we even see a new bad guy who had this amazing elegance to him which was really nice but you could tell he he would do whatever it took to get the job done but he was so graceful that made him so cool. I could not believe they killed the preacher he had a hidden past that I wish they would have explained. Also I could not believe they killed wash I mean wow, who could have foreseen that.

brother from another planet

What an interesting movie right off the bat. To be honest I thought It would be more alien Sci Fi. But it was no big deal see it was the opening that through me off. The movie raises a lot of questions at the end. Like why cant he talk and the other group of black people at the end were they alien can they talk because they didn't and if they cant why cant black people talk on their planet, where is he from were those black people alien because those two white guys were afraid of them and they were not afraid of those humans in the bar. And what the hell happened to them did they self destruct. And why was the main character running from them. At one point in the movie he motions to a photograph of a runaway slave and says thats him are their slaves on his home world is he a slave. The movie is pretty quite not a lot of drama takes place during it. Which is why I had it on in the back ground and would follow in and out of it. What bugs me the most is why he never talks. The movie explains absolutely nothing which is kind of nice not to have all of the answers. To be just thrown into the whole of everything. But its is also frustrating and you never really figure out what his mission here is he just goes about. With no particular motive. Which definitely sets this movie apart. I dont know I myself just was curious to why he was doing anything like all the spying, all the drug reckon all of the fixing. He is just there but whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy. There are no answers, only questions more and more questions.

snow crash

I really enjoyed snow crash it was a really good book but the book was so jumbled and hectic. Which seems to be the case of most sci fi books. But this book was slightly different because I could just find entire pages to skip because of it sheer mess of words. And because of so much confusion it wasn't till a quarter of the way through the book that I noticed time wasn't linear which also might add to the mass gobbledygook. I could not get into the characters very much because of all the switching and hoping around. But if I had to pick a character to follow around it would be Hiro Protagonist he seemed the most interesting. But he never hung around and when it did get to him I couldnt tell in what time place the story took part in and for the love god why all the jumping around. But Y.T. Was a close second she was really interesting as well I especially enjoyed it when the two were working together. The book should have just focused on just that. So of the concepts the book was trying to push were a little diluted to be honest the books biggest problem was the fact that it was all of the place in more than one way.

empire star

I am sad to say I did not enjoy the book from the moment I read the book. And thus because of it I could not get very far. Which was a shame because I really enjoyed Babel 17. that was a great read truly filling. I immediately did not care for the way comet joe talked. I could not stand it. And much like babel 17 the book flung you around with out much care. This too was also a pain in the ass.

babeling-17

I truly enjoyed babel-17 it was an amazing read, all great characters everyone of them. I did not mind being thrown in the middle of the story like I was the story was not complex so it was really easy to figure out. What was trouble sum for me was the writing language the book is in. sometimes I just could not for the life of me figure out what the hell is going on. There would just be certain parts in the book just randomly where I felt the book was talking gibberish or maybe just babel-17. But I did really enjoy the complexity of babel-17 I felt the book really kept you on your toes. The book also pushed a lot of bounds at the time of the books release it was uncustom to have such an out going female lead role at the time it was unheard of but the author had done it. I also love the world the author has set up like the whole prosthetic surgery thing being not only accepted but also encouraged not that anyone is condemned for not doing it. It was just interesting to hear all the scenes or individual characters with oh how you say enhancements. Like the pilot who resembles a lion or the ships cook who has the ears horns and tail of the devil. Its just an entirely normal thing which kind of resembles todays kids with all the body modifications. I wonder how long before something like the book will be completely realistic. This book was the first book I have ever read that just dropped me into it like it was part or a series and I just happened to read the second first by mistake so this book is definitely unique. But despite all of that this book was amazing.

equal rights

Equal rights started off incredibly slow and in fact took a few day to get into but none the less I eventually fell right into it. What grabbed my attention. Was the rambunctious little girl Eskarina, you could not help but fall in love with her character. She really just had a wit about her. You never knew what she would do next but you knew it would be really entertaining. You really felt for the other characters in the story such as granny weatherwax who took it upon herself to train little esk. Even she never knew what to expect from the little trouble maker. The adventures esk has are phenomenal at nine years old she can completely take care of herself well sort of. Well she can at least handle herself. She has a really difficult personality and I connect with her on that level which is really nice. I liked the idea behind the book but I dont think it was executed very well. If another author other than terry pratchett had written the book. It would have been much stronger. But the book stayed true to its name. It was really about the struggle for equal rights in society. And that is a heavy topic especially in todays society. The whole idea of wizards only being men and witches only being women is incredibly unfair and then to have a female wizard /witch really messes with things. But thats what we want, we want to see things change we want to see difference. I have taken a look at terry pratchett's other work and I have found it to be less enjoyable I have not read a lot of it but I have peeked into it. And I have to say not for me. But the whole Idea was a really neat concept, the world being carried on the back of a great turtle on the backs of four elephants and how the world is shaped like a disk.

anansi boys

Anansi boys was a good read but not very filling. It was the equivalent of eating chinese food, I was hungry all over again 30 min. later. But this did not stop me from enjoying the book. The book had a lot of depth to it. Along with a whole lot of layers. The book starts off really funny explaining how fat charlie had his life ruined by his fathers death. It was not far into the book that you realize fat charlie is a push over, child like and has more than enough dad issues along with twice the amount of issues he has with his self esteem. The introduction of spiders character has an interesting, well spider himself is interesting. He turns out to be fat Charlie's other half of himself. This was a good surprise I thought It was also interesting to watch the two boys switch women and become the better of it. Like the universe was righting a few wrongs. Fat charlie definitely learns a hell of a whole lot not only about him self but also his family history and all of this really helps charlie figure out who the hell he is and where he fits into the world and that is something he really struggled with his entire life. Fat Charles brother really turns his life to pieces when he shows up and seems to be convinced he can do what ever he wants for example when he takes fat Charlie's fiance for himself and thinks nothing of it. When spider first shows up he is admired by fat charlie because he is the exact opposite of him along with everything he wants to be and more. I love at the end how everything falls apart for each of the characters all at the same time only to have it at the very end all tie back together except only different and this time proper.

interview with a a vampire

This is a very original vampire tale. Most vampire tales we are given talk about the main character being viscous or now very whinny. But in interview with a vampire. The story is about learning how the road of immortality is a very lonely one and how it is meant to be traveled alone. And all the while Lest-at is explaining it to the kid who just so in love with the idea of being immortal that he cannot hear the message. The story is a really powerful one to have the focus being about alone is a difficult one. As human beings we are whole heartedly afraid of being alone and even more to die alone. And this fantastical idea of immortality and how you would never be plagued by those things. But then to have stripped away by the fact that it would only be worse, is truly frightening. The story was a great read I was interested the entire time, and I wanted more, never being satisfied just like a vampire. The really focuses around immortality, it is the main subject in this book. And this is the first time we are lead to believe it's not what it's cracked out to be. We hve this illusion that if your immortal nothing matters if somone died there would be someone else to take their place. And that you can also be bad you know. Everyone who is not immortal is just a tool to feed you. But thats not the case. After a while you begin to envy mortals because they can die, and that even though they dont have very long they did enjoy life very much. And it ws a sad lesson for Lest-at to learn. He has spent hundreds of years traveling around with one person or another and he always loses them in the end and there is disagreement and at the end he has to face the bitter truth that he will always be alone.

pride prejedice and crap

pride and prejudice was already a satyr on English society. so to bring in zombies into this story made this very difficult to read. and to add zombies into the story made it a satyr about a satyr. the book it's self was very slow and drawn out, i found it very impossible to care for any of the characters. the fact that the book jumped from character to character was really annoying. half the time i did not know what the hell was going to or who was speaking. the only thing that kept this story remotely interesting for me were the action scenes, which were few and thrown in at random places within the story that made little or no sense. i cannot say whether or not being a fan of Jane Austin's work would have had any effect on me or my views of the story, or whether or not having never read any of Austin's work. but i can say this after reading this book i would never want to

frankenstein

i found Frankenstein to be a very sad novel. in the failure to create the perfect man, was left with something less and because of that branded his creation "monster" which gave allowed it to be killed. i felt the book showed us we were the monsters. the book was very feminine no doubt Mary Shelly's views on society underline the entire story.
